What Is Roof Repointing?

Repointing is replacing the flexible pointing — the sealing layer that locks your ridge capping to the roof and keeps water out. Older roofs around Buderim, Nambour and Palmwoods were finished with rigid mortar, which cracks as the roof expands and contracts through Queensland summers. Modern flexible pointing is a polymer-based compound that flexes with that movement instead of cracking, sealing the ridge line properly for years. What’s the difference between repointing and rebedding?
Rebedding replaces the mortar bed the ridge caps actually sit on; repointing replaces the sealing layer over the top. If the bedding is sound, repointing alone does the job. If the caps are loose or the bedding has broken down, rebedding comes first. We assess both and quote for what your roof actually needs.

How long does flexible pointing last?
Typically 10–15+ years. Because it flexes with the roof’s natural movement, it far outlasts the rigid mortar used on older homes.

Do you repoint the whole roof or just the damaged sections?
Either. If failure is isolated to one ridge or hip, a sectional repoint is fine. If the pointing is the same age everywhere and failing in patches, repointing the lot usually works out better than repeat call-outs — we’ll give you both options.

What affects the cost of repointing?
