What Is an ACE Nu-Line Gutter System?
On a normal roofline there are two separate parts doing two separate jobs. The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof and carries the gutter brackets. The gutter is its own length of steel that hangs off the front of it. If the gutter rusts, the fascia stays where it is.
The Nu-Line system does away with that split. It’s a single roll-formed steel section that works as the fascia and the gutter at the same time — one continuous piece running the length of the roof, taking the edge of the roof sheeting, covering the rafter ends and draining the water. That’s why you’ll hear it called an all-in-one fascia gutter, a combined fascia and gutter, or simply a fascia gutter system.
At the time it made good sense. One product, one trade, quick to install, and it gave a clean straight roofline with no visible fascia board. Plenty of Queensland homes were built with it. The catch only shows up decades later: the part that rusts out is also the part holding the roof edge together.

How to Tell If You Have Nu-Line Guttering
Most people find out they have nuline gutters the hard way — they ring around for a re-gutter quote and get told nobody wants the job. You can work it out yourself from the ground in about a minute. Stand back from the house, look up at the edge of the roof, and check for these:
- There’s no separate fascia board. The face of the gutter runs all the way up to the underside of the roof sheeting. There’s no timber or metal board sitting behind it.
- The roofline is one continuous piece of steel. A Nu Line profile is a single folded section from the roof edge down to the bottom of the gutter, with no join in between.
- The front face is tall and flat. NuLine has a deep, squared-off face, noticeably deeper than a standard quad or half-round gutter.
- The roof sheets lap straight onto it — the sheeting sits on the same section that carries the water away.
- Rust starts low and in the corners, then works along the run.
- Staining down the wall below the roofline, or water dripping behind the gutter rather than over the front of it.
If two or three of those match, you’re almost certainly looking at a Nu-Line or ACE gutter system. The quickest way to confirm it is a photo: one from ground level looking up at the roof edge, and one of the worst corner you can see. Why Replace Nu-Line or ACE Gutters?
These old systems were popular decades ago, but they come with some serious drawbacks today:
- Hard to repair – You can’t just replace the gutter without modifying the fascia
- Not compatible with most modern gutter profiles
- Often rusted or failing after decades of exposure
- Hard to match if only sections are damaged
- Rust doesn’t stay in the gutter – because the section is also the fascia, water that gets behind it runs onto the rafter ends and roof edge rather than off the front

There’s also a practical reason not to sit on it. Once the steel is holed, every bit of rain goes somewhere it shouldn’t — behind the gutter, onto the timber, down the wall. The longer it runs like that, the more likely the carpentry side of the job grows before anyone has even touched the gutter.

Why Nu-Line Gutter Can’t Be Repaired in Sections
This is the part that catches most people out, and it’s worth understanding before you start collecting quotes.
On a conventional roof, a rusted gutter is a straightforward fix. The gutter is a separate item hanging off a fascia that isn’t going anywhere. Cut out the bad run, slide a new length in, seal the joins, refit the brackets — and the roof itself never moves.
You can’t do that with a nuline gutter, because the gutter is the fascia. Cut a section out and you’ve removed the structural edge that the roof sheeting, the barge and the rafter ends are all fixed to. There’s nothing left to hang a new gutter off. On top of that, matching sections for these systems aren’t something you can pick up any more, so even a like-for-like patch isn’t on the table.
So replacing a Nu-Line system isn’t really a re-gutter at all. It’s a conversion — you’re turning an all-in-one fascia gutter into a conventional separate fascia and gutter, which means you finish with a different roofline to the one you started with. That takes three different trades, because there are three separate pieces of work involved.
1. Opening up and re-laying the roof edge
Lifting and re-laying the roof edge is a tiler’s job. On most of these older brick-and-tile homes the bottom course of tiles laps over the top of the old Nu-Line section, so it has to come up before anything else can move. The edge is opened up, the old section comes out, then the tiles are re-laid, re-bedded and sealed once the new fascia is in. Get this step wrong and you swap a leaking gutter for a leaking roof edge, which is a far worse problem.
2. Building a new fascia where there wasn’t one
Rebuilding the fascia is carpentry. The moment the old nu line guttering comes off, the house has no fascia at all, so a new one has to be built and fixed to the rafter ends — and the rafter ends themselves regularly need attention first, because they’ve been sitting behind a rusting steel section with water running over them for a very long time. This is the part of the job nobody can price accurately until the old system is off.
3. Installing the new guttering
Installing the new fascia cover and guttering is the metal roofing and roof-plumbing side — new gutter, brackets, stop ends, outlets and downpipes, set to fall so the whole roofline actually drains and meets code. This is the only part of the job that looks like a normal re-gutter, and it’s the last of the three.
That’s why a handyman or a one-man gutter installer will usually knock this work back, and why a Nu-Line quote reads higher than a plain re-gutter quote on the house next door. You’re not buying gutter — you’re buying a rebuilt roofline. It’s also why there’s no genuinely cheap version of this job. Anyone pricing it like a straight gutter swap either hasn’t looked at it properly or isn’t planning to do all three parts.

What’s Involved in the Replacement?
This isn’t a quick patch job. Here’s the order it actually happens in on site:
- Inspection and quote. We look at the whole roofline — condition of the steel, the roof edge and rafter ends, access, downpipe positions and where the water has to go. We price it off what’s actually there, not off a photo.
- Set up and protection. Access equipment and edge protection as the job requires, and drop sheets over gardens, paths and anything under the work area.
- Roof sheeting released. Fixings along the bottom edge are undone and the sheets turned back far enough to get at the old section.
- Careful removal of the old Nu-Line/ACE system. The combined fascia gutter comes off in lengths. This is where you find out what’s been sitting behind it.
- Rafter ends checked and made good. Anything rotted or rusted gets dealt with first. There’s no sense hanging a new fascia off timber that’s had water running down it for years.
- New fascia installed. Timber or metal, depending on the job and the house, fixed straight and true so the gutter has something proper to hang off.
- Roof sheets re-laid and re-fixed. Sheeting goes back down over the new edge, refixed and sealed so the roof is watertight again.
- Supply and install new Colorbond gutters. Gutter, brackets and stop ends installed to fall, with colours and profiles matched to suit the home’s style.
- Downpipes and outlets. Outlets cut, downpipes run and connected so the system drains where it should and meets code.
- Clean-up and disposal. Old material off site, gutters flushed, the yard left as we found it — and we’ll walk you around the job before we go.

What Drives the Cost of a Nu-Line Gutter Replacement
We don’t publish a price for this work, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Two houses that look identical from the street can turn out to be very different jobs once the old nu line guttering is off. Here’s what actually moves the number, so you can read a quote properly rather than just comparing totals:
- Roof perimeter. Total lineal metres of roofline is the single biggest factor. A long, spread-out single storey can carry more metres than a taller, more compact house.
- Single or double storey. Height changes the access equipment needed and how the work is staged.
- Access. How close a vehicle can get, whether scaffold is needed, tight setbacks, sloping blocks, pools, retaining walls and mature gardens under the roofline.
- Condition of the roof timbers underneath. Nobody can see this until the old section comes off. Sound rafter ends are quick; rotted ones mean extra work before a new fascia can go anywhere.
- Number of downpipes and where they run. More outlets, longer runs and connecting into existing stormwater all add work.
- Roof complexity. Hips, valleys, gables and multiple roof levels all take longer than a simple rectangle of the same length.
- Gutter profile and colour. Both affect material cost.
- Whole house or one elevation. Doing the lot in one visit is generally more efficient per metre than coming back later.

Is it nuline, nu-line, nu line or NuLine?
All of them get used, along with ACE nuline, ACE Nu-Line and just ACE gutters. We also get people searching “newline gutter” and “new line gutter”, which is the same thing spelled how it sounds. They all describe the same combined fascia-and-gutter system, and we replace the lot.
What is a Nu-Line gutter system?
It’s an all-in-one fascia gutter — a single steel section that acts as both the fascia and the gutter, rather than the two separate components used on a modern roofline. That single-piece design is the reason it can’t be treated like an ordinary gutter.
How do I know if I have nuline gutters?
Look up at the roof edge. If there’s no separate fascia board behind the gutter, the whole roofline is one continuous folded steel section, and the roof sheets lap straight onto it, that’s a Nu-Line system. Send us a photo from ground level and we’ll confirm it.
Can you repair just a section of nu line gutter?
Not usually. Because the fascia and gutter are one piece, cutting out a bad length removes the structural edge the roof is fixed to, and there’s nothing left to attach a replacement gutter to. Matching sections also aren’t readily available any more.
Do you replace the fascia as well as the gutter?
Yes — we have to. Once the old nuline gutter is off there’s no fascia left on the house, so a new fascia is built and fixed before any new gutter goes on. That’s included in the work, not an extra you get surprised with later.
Why does Nu-Line gutter replacement cost more than a normal re-gutter?
Because it isn’t a re-gutter. It’s a conversion from an all-in-one fascia gutter to a conventional separate fascia and gutter, which takes three different trades — a tiler to lift and re-lay the roof edge, a carpenter to rebuild the fascia, and a metal roofer for the new fascia and gutter. You’re paying for a rebuilt roof edge, not just a new length of gutter.
Do I need to replace the whole house at once?
It’s recommended, for appearance and for function — a half-converted roofline looks odd and leaves the old system to keep deteriorating. Doing it in one go is usually more efficient per metre too. We’ll assess and advise based on your setup.
What are the new gutters made from?
We typically use Colorbond steel — long-lasting, rust-resistant, and available in modern colours to match the roof, the trim or the rest of the house.
How long does the job take?
Most Nu-Line conversions take 1–2 days on site. It still depends on the size of the roofline, access, the weather, and what condition the timbers are in once the old system is off, so we’ll give you a realistic timeframe for your house when we quote it, rather than a number that suits the brochure.
Can you install new downpipes too?
Absolutely — we’ll fit the whole system, outlets and downpipes included, so it drains properly and meets code. If the existing downpipe layout was never adequate, we’ll tell you and set it up correctly.
